Alumni Function on 8th June 2011

More than twenty leading Australian universities visited Laos on the 8th and 9th of June to provide information about studying in Australia.

On Wednesday, 8 June, over 160 Australian Alumni joined the Australian Ambassador, Ms Lynda Worthaisong and distinguished guests for the Annual Australian Alumni function at the Mercure Vientiane.  Guests included graduates from Australian Scholarships, current students preparing to study in Australia, teachers from Vientiane College and representatives from the Australian tertiary institutions.

The Australian Government has been providing scholarships for tertiary education in Australia since 1963 to assist Lao PDR to meet its human resource needs.  Today, more than 1,000 awardees have successfully gained tertiary qualifications in Australia and returned to apply their new skills and contribute to the development of Lao PDR.

Ms Worthaisong congratulated the recently-returned students who have successfully obtained their academic awards from Australian institutions and encouraged those about to embark on their studies in Australia.  She said “Australian alumni have an enormously important role to play in the economic and social development of Laos”.

She also expressed her thanks to the Australian universities for supporting the Lao market through this visit, and noted that Australian universities were able to provide a high-quality, English-language education for the growing number of Lao students who were interested in furthering their studies overseas.

Lao students interested in studying in Australia should contact Vientiane College about study options.
